Opening Reception: John Brickels

November 6, 2009
5:00 pmto8:00 pm

Sculptor John Brickels creates a diverse group of buildings, machines, robots, pipes and claymobiles which are unified through their common medium -the monochromatic clay which infuses these sculptures with a gentle narrative and subtle humor. His falling barn sculptures, tittering urban row houses and collapsed rust-belt factories celebrate the hidden beauty of entropy. Claymobiles spring from a love/hate relationship with automobile culture, while machines are an off-shoot of the rust-belt culture of his childhood home and a fascination with the many armed, asbestos covered furnace that loomed in the basement. Robots are a desire to put a human face on his work and a nod to the anachronistic stylings of the steampunk movement.
